Mangaluru, Nov 17 : Mount Carmel Central School’s much-anticipated Annual Sports Meet for students in Grades V to XII kicked off in grand style on Thursday, November 14, 2024 celebrating true sportsmanship. Held at the school's new grounds, the event was a remarkable showcase of athleticism, team spirit, and sportsmanship, bringing together students and staff in a vibrant celebration of physical fitness and determination.
The day began with a warm and enthusiastic welcome to the audience, followed by the introduction of the esteemed Chief Guest, Mr Donnete Joseph D'Souza, Retired Physical Director of St Aloysius College, Mangaluru. The school band, led by Master Samarth Madhukarof gradeX and the NCC cadets Akanksha and Ahana, welcomed the chief guest with a vibrant and energetic musical performance. The procession was accompanied by Principal Sr Melissa, PTA Vice President Mrs Preema D’Costa, Vice Principal Sr Teena and coordinator Sr Supreetha.
The inaugural ceremony officially began with the hoisting of the school flag by Chief Guest Mr Donnete Joseph D’Souza. This was followed by a spectacular march-past, where students from the five houses - Daffodils, Bluebells, Orchids, Anthuriums, and Tulips demonstrated impeccable synchronization and discipline. The parade, representing unity, consistency and teamwork, was a feast for the eyes and filled the audience with pride.A prayer song led by the school choir set a solemn tone for the day, followed by a captivating welcome dance performed by the school's talented dancers. Vice Principal Sr Teena welcomed everyone to the event, setting an inspiring atmosphere for the sports celebrations to follow.
The highlight of the ceremony was the arrival of the symbolic flame, representing the light of spirit, knowledge and life. The torch was carried by a group of school’s outstanding sports stars ranging from karate to basketball. Chief Guest Mr Donnete Joseph D'Souza received the torch, which was then placed in a prominent position within the ground to burn throughout the meet, symbolizing the spirit of the competition. The sports oath was administered by the school’s sports minister, Sakshi Christina Karkada, emphasizing the core values of fair play and sportsmanship. To mark the official opening of the sports meet, the Chief Guest released five coloured balloons, each representing the school’s houses, signalling the start of the day’s athletic events.
The chief guest Mr Donnete Joseph D’Souza, in his address, praised the efforts of both students and teachers, stressing the importance of maintaining a strong body to foster a strong mind. He also motivated the students to consider sports as a viable career and take advantage of government schemes that promote young athletes.Winners of various team games were honoured with medals, and certificates awarded for their accomplishments. Tr. Leena Jose compered the event, while Tr. Sylvia delivered the vote of thanks, concluding the inaugural ceremony on a positive note.
The day’s athletic events, including competitive track and field competitions, saw students exhibiting exceptional skill and sportsmanship. In between the events, the day being the Children’s Day, there was a display of flash mob and the teachers greeted the students through a wishing song.
As the day came to a close, the school hosted a spirited valedictory ceremony to mark the successful conclusion of the Annual Sports Meet 2k24. The ceremony was graced by our own, Sr Carissima, the administrator of the school. It began with a prayer song led by the school choir, followed by Tr. Priyanka’s acknowledgment of Sr Carissima's presence. In her speech, Sr. Carissima shared words of inspiration with the students, urging them to always strive for excellence and emphasizing that success is achieved through hard work and perseverance. Her message resonated deeply with the students, motivating them to continue pushing themselves both in athletics and academics.
The prize distribution ceremony followed, where the most outstanding athletes of the day were recognized for their exceptional performances. Sr Carissima presented the awards to the winners of the relay’s, individual and team championships.
A touching moment during the ceremony saw the lowering of the school flag, which had been proudly hoisted earlier in the day. House Captains performed the task with great pride, as the solemn tune of “Abide with Me” played in the background. The flag was carefully folded and handed over to the sports secretary, Sakshi Karkada, before being passed on to Principal Sr Melissa for safekeeping until the next Sports Day.
In her vote of thanks, Sr Supreetha expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the event, acknowledging the efforts of the students, teachers and specially the PET’s. The ceremony concluded with a spirited rendition of the National Anthem, reinforcing the values of unity, pride and patriotism.
The day’s success was a clear reflection of Mount Carmel Central School's commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals through sports, discipline and teamwork.
