Sports Day is a vibrant celebration of athleticism, teamwork, determination, perseverance and unbridled enthusiasm. The event aimed to provide exercise and recreation, build character and teamwork skills, promote physical fitness, friendship and healthy competitive spirit among the students. The colors of jerseys, team spirit, the palpable energy, cheerful shouts and slogans make Sports Day a memorable event in the academic calendar. It's a celebration of human potential, unity, learning from challenges and the sheer joy of pushing one's limits.
The annual Sports Meet for the academic year 2024-2025 at St. Raymond’s PU College, Vamanjoor was held on November 12, 2024 at College ground, bringing together students, Lectures, and parents for a day of friendly competition and celebration of athletic achievements. Dr. Sr. Mariola BS, Coordinator for Bethany Educational Society, Mangalore Province and Correspondent of the College presided the event. Rev. Fr. James D’Souza, Parish Priest, St. Joseph the worker church, Vamanjoor, Dr. Raghavendra Holla, Chairman, Swastika National Business School, Mr. Shekhar Kadthala, President of Mangalore Taluk PET Association and Mrs. Reshma Pais, PTA Treasurer were the Chief Guests for the Sports Meet Inaugural.
The event kicked off at 9.30am, with an energetic march past from students class wise, led by the College band. The College Sports Captain Master Ninad along with three other outstanding athletes of the college paraded the college flag with reverence and it was then hoisted by the esteemed guests. To ensure the success of the grand fest, the college choir invoked God's blessings with an Opening Prayer. Ms. Greeshma, who has achieved a great position in sports and captains of the various classes took the Oath on behalf of all the students of the College. The Athletic Torch, symbolizing the spirit of sportsmanship and beacon of hope was then passed on from Master Vaishnav, taluk level sports representative of the college to Mr Shekar Kadthala, chief guest who then ignited the cauldron along with other guest , marking the commencement of the event. With the unveiling of the Sports Meet Banner by the guests and declaration from the president, the Athletic Meet was officially inaugurated.
Dr. Sr. Mariola in her presidential speech emphasized the importance of teamwork, determination, and fair play. Rev. Fr. James blessed the students and wished them good luck. Dr. Raghavendra Holla highlighted on everyday practice to be a good player. He said , Only with practice can you be a better version of yourself. Mr. Shekar Kadthala explained the importance of sports and the benefits you get through it in our daily life.
The day was filled with a variety of events catering to all the skill levels. These included : 1) Track Events - 100m, 200m, and 400m sprints, Relay races, Long-distance races (800m, 1500m) and Walk race. Field Events - Long jump, High jump, Shot put and Javelin throw. The inter-class 4x100m relay race and tug of war were the most thrilling events of the day. The faculty vs. parents walk race and tug-of-war was a crowd favorite, with the parents emerging victorious in a hard-fought contest. Games like inter-class kabaddi, throwball and Volleyball matches were conducted one week prior to the sports meet.
Participants displayed impressive athleticism, with several close finishes and personal bests achieved throughout the day. Ms. Bhoomika Rai and Master Noufal won the individual championship among girls and boys respectively. The event concluded with a closing ceremony where winners were awarded medals and trophies. Sports meet provided an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their athletic abilities, break records, and inspire others with their achievements while promoting teamwork and resilience. They look forward to next year’s event, which promises to be even bigger and better. The day witnessed active participation from students, making it a memorable and successful occasion.
