Puttur, 9 April 2025 : The Inter-College Women’s Cricket (Leather Ball) Overarm Tournament, jointly organized by Mangalore University, Mangala Gangotri, and St Philomena Autonomous College, concluded on Monday at the St Philomena College grounds. The event saw an enthusiastic participation of teams from across the region, with Brahmavar SMS College emerging as the champions and Alva’s College, Moodbidri, securing the runner-up position.

The tournament highlighted the rising standards of women’s cricket at the collegiate level, showcasing immense talent and competitive spirit. Brahmavar SMS College’s stellar performance throughout the matches culminated in their well-deserved victory, while Alva’s College, Moodbidri, also impressed with their skill and grit on the field.

Individual honours were awarded to the most outstanding players of the tournament. Swarna Gowri of Brahmavar SMS College was named Best Bowler for her consistent and incisive spells. Dhanushree of Alva’s College was adjudged the Best Batsman, thanks to her solid batting performances. Meanwhile, Lakshmi of Brahmavar SMS College was awarded Best All-Rounder for her versatility and match-winning contributions with both bat and ball.

The valedictory ceremony, held in the evening, was graced by Dr Gerald Santosh D’Souza, Director of the Department of Physical Education, Mangalore University. Distributing the prizes to the winners, he addressed the gathering and remarked, “Cricket is not only a glamorous sport but also a mind game. Technical skill, timing, physical ability, and relentless practice are crucial. Knowing how to win is as important as playing well.”

Dr Vijaya Kumar Moleyar, Vice Principal of St Philomena Autonomous College, also spoke on the occasion, stating, “With the IPL tournament underway, we are reminded that commitment is key to success in cricket. Legends like Sachin Tendulkar are living proof that hard work and dedication lead to greatness.”

Also present on the dais were Dr Prasanna from the Department of Physical Education, Mangalore University, and Dr Podiya, who served as the tournament observer. Elias Pinto, Director of Physical Education at St Philomena Autonomous College, welcomed the gathering and announced the winners, while Rajesh Mulya, Director of Physical Education, St Philomena PU College, assisted in the smooth conduct of the event.
