Mangaluru, Feb 28 : INAUGURAL
The Departments of Science at St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, celebrated National Science Day on 28th February 2025 at 9.15amin the Conference Hall with great enthusiasm. Dr Praahas Amin, Head of the Department and Associate Professor of Computer Science and Design at Canara Engineering College, Mangaluru, graced the occasion as the chief guest. The event was presided over by Sr Dr M. Venissa A. C., the Principal, along with Mrs Helen Serrao, Dean of Science and Convenor of the event, and Ms Sunena Rai, Vice President of Science and Student Coordinator. Dr Ita D’Souza, Head of the Chemistry Department, welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest. The official inauguration of Science Day featured a spectacular ceremony led by Dr Praahas Amin. Ms Sunena Rai provided a brief overview of the day's planned activities. Sr Dr M. Venissa A. C. encouraged students to actively participate in various competitions through her inspiring address.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr Praahas Amin emphasized the importance of trust in science, distinguishing between true and false facts in critical areas such as vaccines and climate change. He highlighted the need for open science, advocating for research that is accessible and transparent. Stressing the importance of effective science communication, he encouraged presenting science as a story, making it engaging and relatable. He also discussed the power of social media and visual storytelling in making science more accessible. One of the most memorable moments of the session was when Dr Praahas Amin captivated the audience by showcasing stunning pictures of nebulae and comets, personally captured through his telescope in Mangaluru. These breath-taking images not only highlighted the wonders of the cosmos but also underscored the role of astronomy in engaging the public with science.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms Spandana of II BSc. Ms Mokshashri of III BSc efficiently compered the program, ensuring its smooth flow.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE COMPETITIONS

A range of innovative and fun-filled competitions were organized, promoting scientific curiosity and creative expression. The competitions were designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity and creativity among students:

NutriQuest – The Ultimate Nutrition Challenge began with a quiz testing students' knowledge of nutrition. Top scorers advanced to a cook-off, where they creatively prepared delicious dishes using provided ingredients.

Sci-Maze – Word Search challenged participants to find scientists’ names, enhancing their scientific knowledge.

Nature's Crown – Hair Decoration with Flowers showcased the artistic skills of students while promoting eco-friendly fashion using natural elements.

Pixelate – Pixelate provided a platform for students to express their creativity through photography and editing. Participants clicked and edited photos on scientific themes, showcasing their digital skills and storytelling abilities.

Infinity Chase – A Treasure Hunt combined fun with learning, as participants solved science-based riddles to find hidden treasures.

Rock the Art – Stone Painting Competition allowed participants to express their creativity on stones, highlighting environmental themes.

A total of 206 students participated in various competitions organized by the departments of sciences.

Afternoon session was conducted by Dr. Geetha Pinto on eco-friendly skincare: personalised beauty through green chemistry was another added highlight of the day.

VALEDICTORY

St Agnes College concluded its vibrant Science Day with a grand valedictory ceremony that marked the end of a day filled with learning, creativity, and scientific exploration. The ceremony was graced by the esteemed presence of the Chief Guest, Dr Ita D'Souza, Head of the Department and Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, St Agnes College (Autonomous). Her presence added inspiration and encouragement to the young minds present.

The valedictory ceremony commenced at 3pm sharp in the Conference Hall with a warm welcome by the Master of Ceremony, Ms Senona of II B.Sc. who set a cheerful and celebratory tone. This was followed by the prayer led by Komuha and the group. Ms. Preemal of II B.Sc. welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest.

Dr Ita D'Souza, in her valedictory address, praised the students for their active participation and ingenuity. She emphasized the importance of experiential learning and encouraged students to think beyond conventional boundaries. She also highlighted the relevance of interdisciplinary knowledge in today’s world and motivated students to pursue their scientific interests with dedication and passion. Her inspiring words left a profound impact on the audience, urging them to approach science with curiosity and creativity.

The event also featured feedback sessions from participants, who shared their experiences and insights. These reflections highlighted how the competitions not only tested knowledge but also encouraged creative thinking, teamwork, and communication skills among students.

The prize distribution ceremony was the highlight of the day. Winners of each competition were awarded certificates by the chief guest, who congratulated them on their outstanding performance. The overall championship was secured by II B.Sc., who showcased exceptional talent and enthusiasm across all events. The ceremony concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Sonal. The event successfully celebrated scientific creativity, innovation, and collaboration, making it a memorable experience for all.
