Mangaluru, Feb 15 : On Monday, February 10th, 2025, St. Agnes School (CBSE), Bendore, Mangaluru, proudly observed World Pulses Day with an array of engaging and informative activities aimed at raising awareness about the vital role pulses play in our daily lives. The event was a grand success, with enthusiastic participation from students across all grades.
Pulses, including beans, lentils, chickpeas, and peas, are not only rich in protein, fibre, and essential nutrients but also contribute significantly to sustainable agriculture, soil fertility, and global food security.
Grades 1 and 2 launched the celebrations by showcasing their sprouted pulses, which they had tenderly nurtured at home with the support of their parents. The students enthusiastically explained the sprouting process and shared the numerous health benefits of consuming pulses, gaining a deeper understanding of germination, nutrition, and the science behind these powerhouse foods.
In Grade 3, students captivated their peers with original poems that beautifully illustrated the nutritional, environmental, and culinary importance of pulses. Their lively and expressive performances not only displayed their creativity but also enhanced their public speaking and communication skills, engaging the entire school in a lively conversation about the power of pulses. Grade 4 students sparked thought with catchy slogans like "Pulses: The Powerhouse of Nutrition" and "Eat Pulses, Stay Healthy". These slogans were creatively displayed and explained by the students, promoting the many benefits of pulses and encouraging others to incorporate them into their daily diet for a healthy lifestyle.
In Grade 5, students delivered confident and compelling one-minute elocution speeches on the theme "Pulses – The Powerhouse of Nutrition." Their well-articulated presentations highlighted pulses’ rich nutritional content, including high levels of protein, fibre, and micro-nutrients, while emphasizing their role in disease prevention and maintaining optimal health. Grade 6 students participated in an interactive quiz, identifying various types of pulses. Additionally, they crafted informative charts showcasing the regional diversity of pulses in India, illustrating their cultural and culinary significance across different states. This activity enriched their knowledge of pulses' crucial role in India’s cuisine and agricultural heritage.
Grade 7 students embraced their culinary creativity by preparing vibrant and nutritious rainbow pulse salads, using a variety of pulses and fresh vegetables. The colourful salads were not only visually striking but also served as a platform for students to explain the numerous health benefits of the ingredients, showcasing how pulses can elevate everyday meals.
Finally, Grade 8 students showcased their creativity by designing an eye-catching noticeboard titled "Tiny Beans, Mighty Benefits." The noticeboard emphasized the far-reaching nutritional, environmental, and culinary advantages of pulses, reminding everyone of their significant impact on a healthy and sustainable food system.
The World Pulses Day celebrations at St. Agnes was a remarkable success, igniting curiosity and fostering a deeper appreciation for pulses among students. Through these engaging activities, students not only learned about the exceptional nutritional value of pulses but also recognized their vital role in promoting a healthier, more sustainable food system.
