Mangaluru, Feb 1 : The Department of Zoology at St. Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangalore, organized an enlightening session titled "Colorful Creations: The Art and Science of Ornamental Fish Breeding" on January 30, 2025. The session was conducted by Glavin Thomas Rodrigues, Assistant Professor from the Department of Zoology, St. Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangalore. His expertise and engaging approach made the session both educational and enjoyable.

The session began with an introduction to fishes, where Mr. Rodrigues explained their diversity, classification, and significance in aquatic ecosystems. He discussed various species of ornamental fish, including Goldfish, Swordtail Fish, Guppy Fish, and Fighter Fish and many more. This provided us insights into their unique characteristics, habitats, and care requirements.

Following this, he delved into the breeding techniques of ornamental fish; explaining their reproductive strategies and the factors influencing successful breeding. He elaborated on sexual dimorphism, highlighting the distinct physical differences between male and female fishes, such as color variations, fin structures, and body size, which play a crucial role in mating and reproduction.

To enhance students' understanding, Mr. Rodrigues presented PowerPoint slides and videos demonstrating fish mating behaviors. The visual presentations showcased the intricate courtship processes of various species, including Betta (Fighter Fish), Guppy Fish, Angelfish and many others . These were particularly fascinating, as it provided a real-time perspective on how fishes breed in controlled environments.

It was a highly informative and interactive session, keeping the audience engaged throughout the program. Mr. Rodrigues’ clear explanations and visual demonstrations made complex biological concepts easy to understand. The discussion on sexual dimorphism provided a new understanding of fish breeding and their importance. Towards the end, there was an engaging question-and-answer session, where students eagerly participated, and asked insightful questions about fish breeding techniques, care, and commercial aspects. Mr. Rodrigues patiently addressed each query, making the session even more enriching.

The event was honored by the presence of Mrs. Shubharekha, Registrar of St. Agnes College (Autonomous), along with Dr. Rachana L. Alva, Head of the Department of Zoology and Dr. Navya H, Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology. The session began with the host, Ms. Uzma, extending a warm welcome to the esteemed guests and participants. This was followed by a prayer by Ms. Sushmitha Hegde and a heartfelt welcome address delivered by Ms. Sinchana Saraswathi. Ms. Hrithika Sunil then introduced the distinguished guest. The event concluded with a vote of thanks expressed by Ms. Akshatha Seth.

The ornamental fish breeding session was a remarkable experience, blending theoretical knowledge with practical demonstrations. It deepened students' understanding of fish reproduction and inspired a greater appreciation for aquatic life.
