Puttur ,2 October 2024 : St Philomena College (Autonomous) observed Gandhi Jayanti with reverence honouring the timeless principles of Mahatma Gandhi and remembering the contributions of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Presiding over the event, Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro emphasized the enduring relevance of Gandhi’s teachings. “The principles of truth, non-violence, equality, and harmony advocated by Mahatma Gandhi are eternal. His simple life serves as a guiding light for all of us. In these times of heightened violence, division, and conflict, we must recognize that true strength lies not in aggression but in peace, tolerance, and compassion. Everyone should contribute, even in small ways, to the development of our country and society”, he said.

Dr Monteiro also paid tribute to Lal Bahadur Shastri, whose birth anniversary coincides with Gandhi Jayanti. “Shastriji was a leader renowned for his humility and dedication and Known for his simplicity and integrity, he embodied the values of selflessness and patriotism throughout his life. His inspiring slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ highlighted profound respect for the soldiers who protect our nation and the farmers who nurture it. His emphasis on self-reliance and support for agricultural reforms laid a strong foundation for India’s progress”, he noted.

He extended congratulations to the students and coordinators of the NSS, NCC, and other active units who participated in various cleanliness drives organized in connection with Gandhi Jayanti.

The ceremony included floral tributes to a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi by guests and students. The principal administered a cleanliness pledge, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and sanitation.

Dr Norbert Mascarenhas, the Registrar (Academics) of the college and Head of the History Department, participated as the chief guest and said, “Today is a day to reflect on the values that Gandhi adhered to throughout his life. He strongly believed in and practiced a lifestyle of self-reliance and simplicity. His vision, environmental concern, and policies promoting the local economy remain relevant. The best way to honour Gandhi is to embody his values in our actions.”

The event commenced with prayers led by students from the Performing Arts Unit. Dr Radhakrishna Gowda, Student Welfare Officer, welcomed the gathering and provided introductory remarks. NCC Naval Wing Officer Tejaswi Bhat proposed a vote of thanks. The program was compered by Prashanth Rai, coordinator of the Performing Arts Unit and Assistant Professor in the Department of Business Administration.

Vice Principal Dr Vijaykumar Moleyar, Controller of Examinations Mrv Vinayachandra, IQAC Coordinator Dr Malini K., NCC Officer Captain Johnson David Sequeira, Deputy Controller of Examinations Abhishek Suvarna, NSS Program Officers Dr. Chandrashekhar and Pushpa N., coordinators of the Rover and Ranger Units, faculty members, and NSS volunteers participated in the program.

Following the formal proceedings, student volunteers actively participated in a campus cleanliness drive, symbolizing the spirit of Gandhi’s vision for a clean and self-reliant nation.
