Puttur, June 8 : The UG Department of Botany, Zoology, and Eco-club at St Philomena College celebrated “World Environment Day and International Biodiversity Day” on June 7, 2024, at the PG Seminar Hall.

Latha G Bhat, Assistant Conservator of Forests, graced the event as the resource person. In her address, she emphasized the importance of conserving resources, recycling, and composting wastes. “We should conserve resources, recycle, and compost wastes. The earth belongs to future generations.
Conservation includes the management of human use of natural resources for current public benefit and sustainable social and economic utilization,” she stated.

The guest of honour Kirana B M, Range Forest Officer of Puttur, highlighted the significance of maintaining the diversity and integrity of ecosystems and the services they provide. “Conservation seeks to maintain the diversity and integrity of ecosystems, as well as the services they provide to humans and other living beings. It also involves restoring degraded habitats, preventing further damage, and promoting responsible use of resources,” he remarked.

Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro delivered the presidential address, focusing on the importance of environmental conservation practices. “Environmental conservation is the practice of preserving the natural world to prevent it from collapsing due to human activities, such as deforestation, unsustainable agricultural practices, and burning fossil fuels,” he explained. He further urged, “Care for the earth, and the earth will take care of us.”

Pratheeksha A and her team from 3rd BSc rendered prayer. Pratheeksha G of 3rd BSc welcomed the guests, Treesa Celestia P V proposed a vote of thanks, and Shravya R S compered the program. Shashiprabha B and Mrs. Smitha Alva Asst Professors from the Department of Botany, along with Shree Raksha B V from the Department of Zoology, provided essential support for the event. IQAC Coordinator Dr Malini K was gracefully present on the dais.

A total of 73 BSc students benefited from the program, gaining valuable insights into environmental and biodiversity conservation.
