Puttur , March 17, 2024 : In the inter-college women’s leather ball cricket tournament held jointly by Mangaluru University and St Philomena College, Puttur on March 15th at the Philomena College grounds, SMS College Brahmavar emerged as the champions, with Alva’s College Moodbidre securing the runners-up title. St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, claimed the third runner-up position, followed by the University Campus College as the fourth runner-up.

During the valedictory ceremony held in the evening, Advocate and former cricketer Mr Narasimha Prasad, chief guest for the ceremony, emphasized that success is attainable through the nurturing of talent, discipline, rigorous training, and hard work.

Dr Gerald Santosh D'Souza, the Director of the Physical Education Department at Mangalore University, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of fitness, technique, and diligence in achieving success in cricket. He encouraged women athletes not only to excel in inter-university competitions but also to aspire to participate in major tournaments and set new milestones for themselves.

Presiding over the event, Rev. Fr Stany Pinto, the campus director, stressed the significance of mental and physical fitness for athletes across all sports. He commended Mangalore University for providing a platform for sportsmen and urged them to pursue success through dedicated effort.

Dr Ramesh, the Mangalore University Observer, and Dr Vijaya Kumar, the Vice Principal of Philomena College, were among the dignitaries present. The Director of Physical Education at St Philomena College, Dr Elias Pinto, announced the list of winners, with Mr Rajesh Moolya, the Physical Education Director of Philomena Pre-university College, providing assistance.

In a promising development for cricket enthusiasts, Mr Vishwanath Naik, Secretary of the Union Cricketers in Puttur, announced plans for the establishment of a well-equipped cricket stadium in the area. Approximately 24 acres of land have already been allocated for this purpose, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is expected to spearhead this initiative in the near future, he said.

Among the standout performers of the tournament were Lakshmi from Brahmavar SMS College, recognized as the all-rounder, Swarngauri from the same college, named the best batsman, and Sneha from Moodbidre Alva’s College, honoured as the best bowler.
