Derebail - Mangaluru , Sep 3 : On 1st September 2024, YSD - ICYM Derebail organized a Carrom and Chess tournament at 8:00 am in the Most Holy Redeemer church meeting hall. The day began with breakfast served to all participants and attendees.
The Carrom tournament was an inter-ward event in a doubles format, with 20 teams participating. Each ward could send two teams, and a registration fee of Rs. 300 was collected per ward. The fixtures for the Carrom tournament were drawn the day before in the presence of all the ward Gurkars.
The Chess tournament was open to all, with no age limit, and 36 participants registered. The fixtures for Chess were drawn on the day of the event.
The tournament began with a small inaugural ceremony. Sandrine was the host and the event was attended by the Parish Priest Fr. Joseph Martis, Assistant Parish Priest Fr. Kevin Dsouza, Mrs. Sheela Dsouza, Mr. Anil Patrao, Mr. Denzil Pinto, YSD Animator Mrs. Lizzie Fernandes, City Deanery President Christon Menezes, YSD President Royson Fernandes, and YSD Secretary Evangel Menezes. The program started with a prayer led by YSD members and a Bible reading by Sherline Martis. Fr. Joseph Martis wished all participants the best of luck.
The matches started at 8:45 AM after Fr. Joseph Martis and Fr. Kevin Dsouza officially launched the event by striking the Carrom striker and moving the Chess pawn. Christon Menezes explained the Carrom rules and Johanna Pereira explained the Chess rules to the participants.
Fifteen YSD volunteers were present to volunteer for this event. The tournament ended at 12:00pm . It was a successful and enjoyable event.
The prizes to the winners will be given on the Nativity of Mary feast after the feast mass.
