Balkunje - Kinnigoli, Aug 9, 2024 : On Sunday, August 4th, under the leadership of ICYM Balkunje and with the support of the ICYM Mangalore North Deanery, an event called “Gadyanth Gammath” featuring sports in the fields was organized to create awareness among youth about ploughing, seedling, and our culture.
Rev. Fr. Paul Sequeira, who presided over the event, stated that engaging in such sports in the fields allows children to learn the significance of agriculture and our culture, inspiring them to preserve and promote it. He extended his best wishes to the entire event.
Mr. Arun D’Souza, the Development Officer of Kemral Panchayat, who was the chief guest, encouraged the youth to become environmental enthusiasts. The event saw the presence of Balkunje Panchayat President Mrs. Mamatha D. Poonja, ICYM Mangalore North Deanery Director Rev. Fr. Lancy Saldanha, Mangalore Diocese President Mr Winston Sequeira, Nominated Member for Mangalore North Deanery Miss Jasmitha Monteiro, Balkunje Church Executive Committee Vice President Dr. Freeda Rodrigues, Secretary Mrs. Nancy Cardoza, and Convenor of pastoral commissions Mrs. Lavina Serrao.
The inauguration was held by racing buffaloes to enhance our culture.
ICYM Mangalore North Deanery President Mr. Stallan Serrao welcomed everyone, and Balkunje Unit President Miss Clarissa Maria Cardoza proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. Freeda Rodrigues administered the sports pledge. The event was hosted by Miss Neha Serrao, Miss Jonita Dsouza, and Miss Reshal Evelinia Rodrigues. Mr. Colin Baptist Dsouza managed the entire event, while Miss Melreeda Jane Rodrigues conducted the sports competitions.
Individual, paired, and group games were conducted for various age groups.
Towards the end, Rev. Fr. Paul Sequeira personally entered the field and transplanted the seedlings with everyone.
The rice obtained from this effort will be donated to underprivileged families, setting an exemplary model. Seven churches from the Deanery participated in the event, with Balkunje winning the overall championship trophy.
