Mangaluru, Jan 13 : The Seventeenth Graduation Ceremony of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, was held on 13 January 2023 in the Open-Air Stage of the college.
The ceremony witnessed the awarding of Graduation Certificates by the institution to the Class of 2022 comprising of 492 Undergraduates (BE) and 176 Postgraduates (MBA, MCA and PhD).
Dr Gopalkrishna, Executive Director, Karnataka State Higher Education Council, graced the occasion as Chief Guest and presented the degree certificates to the graduands. Mr Ajay Nath, Senior Deputy Director, Chennai Port, was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore and President of SJEC, presided over the ceremony.
Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC, welcomed the graduands from the Class of 2022 and dignitaries to the Graduation Ceremony. Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC introduced the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour.
Mr Ajay Nath spoke about his own experiences and recalled his days as a student. He called upon the students to be flexible and be ready to face the challenges. He went on to say that life is all about connecting dots from the front but to look behind, trust in God and have faith that the dots can connect. He insisted on being connected to the Alma mater.
Dr Gopalkrishna, in his address, mentioned that institution is a place to redefine the purpose of teaching and learning. He spoke about the changes that have been witnessed due to technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Neural Network based systems, which are dominating humans. It is our ability to use the technology that makes us advanced. He highlighted the importance of becoming a lifelong learner, setting goals and pursuing interests, practicing critical thinking, embracing failure and finally seeking mentorship and guidance to be successful in life.
Dr Rio D'Souza administered the graduation oath. Ms Vinutha, graduand from the Department of Computer Applications and Mr Ovin, graduand from the Department of Civil Engineering, were the Valedictorians from the Class of 2022 and delivered the Valedictorian addresses.
Scholastic achievers and Sports achievers were recognized and awarded by Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore and President of SJEC.
Delivering the Presidential Address, the Bishop said that don’t be afraid of failure but fear about the chance you missed, as you have completed one challenge and there are more to come. He also spoke about developing a skill wherever you are, the soft skills of building a relationship and being innovative, which is the soul of all education.
Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D’Souza, Assistant Director of SJEC, Dr Purushothama Chippar, Vice Principal, SJEC, Mr Rakesh Lobo, HR Manager of SJEC and Mr Manjunath B, Co-convenor of the event were also present on this occasion.
Ms Renuka Tantry, Convener of the program offered the vote of thanks. Ms Himani and Mr Rohith compered the program.
