Puttur, Nov 2, 2024 : St Philomena Autonomous College celebrated Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) with a meaningful program commemorating the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Home Minister and unifier of the nation. The event, held in the college quadrangle at 9:00 am on November 1, began with a solemn pledge-taking ceremony led by the Principal, Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro. Faculty and students vowed to uphold the unity and integrity of the nation, reflecting the ideals of Sardar Patel. Flowers were offered in homage to the portrait of Sardar Patel, in honour of his essential role in uniting the nation.

The resource person Mr Vinil Rohan D’Souza, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, in his address highlighted Sardar Patel’s role in integrating princely states India and his vision for a secure, united nation. He encouraged students to embody the values of unity upheld by Patel in their endeavours to build a modern India.

Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, who presided over the event, urged the college community to commit themselves to the ideals of national unity, resonating with the theme of solidarity of the day. Dr Norbert Mascarenhas, Registrar (Academics), was also present on the occasion. NSS Officer, Dr Chandrashekar K, welcomed. Dr Dimple Jennifer Fernandez, Convener of the Red Cross Unit of the College, proposed a vote of thanks. Mr Prashantha Rai, Assistant Professor in the Department of Business Administration compered the program.

Following the formal program, students, NCC cadets, and NSS and Red Cross volunteers engaged in a “Run for Unity,” which began at the college quadrangle and proceeded to Father Patrao Circle. This spirited run was organized to spread the message of national unity across the community. Lt. Johnson David Sequeira and Mrs Pushpa coordinated efforts to ensure the success of this initiative, which brought together participants from all walks of life.

Inspiring ‘Run for Unity’ to promote unity and national integration

To commemorate Ekta Diwas, St Philomena Autonomous College organised an inspiring ‘Run for Unity’ in collaboration with the 3/19 Karnataka Battalion NCC and the 5 Karnataka Naval NCC Unit. Students, NCC cadets, and the local public, who were found rallying in a show of solidarity.

The ‘Run for Unity’ commenced from the college campus, winding its way to the prominent Father Patrao Circle before culminating at the main gate of the college. The ‘run’ symbolized the spirit of togetherness and commitment to national unity, echoing the ethos of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, whose birth anniversary is celebrated as National Unity Day or Ekta Diwas across the country.

Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Principal of the College, lauded the efforts of the cadets, commending their initiative in bringing the community together through such events. “This Unity Run is a fine example of how we, as an institution, can foster a spirit of unity and cooperation among our students and the local community,” he stated, inspiring cadets to continue leading by example.

Capt. Johnson David Sequeira, Army NCC officer, took charge of the organization of the event.
