Mangaluru, Sep 26 : St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, Department of Zoology observed the World Environmental Health Day by organizing a workshop on Vermicomposting on 26th September 2023 at 12:30 Pm in the Zoology Lab.

Vermicomposting, or worm composting, turns kitchen scraps and other green waste into a rich, dark soil by using earthworms. Vermicompost is a source of plant nutrients that improves the organic matter of soil. The main component is worm castings, which makes super compost. Not only is vermicompost rich in nutrients but it is also loaded with the microorganisms that create and maintain healthy soil.

Ms Blairil Vishma Dcunha coordinator of the workshop focused on various kinds of wastes, sewage, paper, garbage, industrial chemicals that can be recycled for beneficial use. She demonstrated the method of setting up the Vermibins using the raw materials.

Mrs Ameetha K, Head, Department of Zoology explained the importance of Vermicomposting.

The students were encouraged to initiate Vermicomposting at their homes.

Ms Vivid Dsouza, Assistant professor, Department of Zoology was also present for the session.
