Puttur, Aug 13 : The Library and Information Centre of St Philomena College Puttur observed the "National Librarians’ Day" on August 12, 2023, at the Spandana Seminar Hall of the College. The event was graced by esteemed guests, including Dr A.P. Radhakrishna, Vice Principal and IQAC Coordinator, as the guest of honour, and Principal of the College Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro as the President.
Dr A.P. Radhakrishna emphasized the significance of libraries in education. He underlined how libraries nurture knowledge, writing, speaking skills, and social contributions. He urged students to foster a love for books, and he shed light on the connection to the occasion as it is the birth anniversary of Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan, father of the Library Science Movement in India. He noted the changing reading habits due to digital devices and encouraged the habit of reading and building personal home libraries.
Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro highlighted that despite the prevalence of smart phones and electronic gadgets, books remain irreplaceable. He stressed that reading books aids focus and induces better sleep. He also highlighted the intellectual benefits of reading and its positive effects on brain training.
Ms Anushree and Ms Abjinja, students of Performing Arts rendered prayer. Mr Abdul Rahman G, College Librarian extended a warm welcome. Mr Manohar S G, Librarian of the PG Centre proposed vote of thanks. Ms Nireeksha of II BBA compered the program.
Ms Zeeta Noronha, Mr Robert Monteiro, Ms Catherine Crasta, Mr Peter D'Souza, Mr Anil Lasrado, and Mr Vinil D’Souza extended their cooperation in organising the event which saw a turnout of 120 enthusiastic students. The National Librarians’ Day celebration at St Philomena College Puttur underscored the enduring value of libraries and the enriching world of books in an increasingly digital age.
