Mangaluru, November 14, 2024 : A solemn Requiem Mass was held this morning at St. Joseph Chapel, Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI), Kankanady, to honour the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Lawrence C. D'Souza, former Assistant Director of FMCI and Administrator of Father Muller Medical College and Hospital (FMMC&H) and Father Muller College of Nursing (FMCON). The Mass was led by Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of the Mangalore Diocese and President of FMCI, who commended Rev. Dr. Lawrence's invaluable contributions to FMCI and his impactful leadership across various Catholic institutions.
Rev. Dr. Lawrence C. D'Souza, who passed away on November 12, 2024, was a dedicated priest and visionary leader with an impressive career spanning several institutions. Born on November 28, 1948, in Pernal, Udupi, and ordained in 1977, he held multiple degrees including a Ph.D. from Fordham University in New York. His tenure at FMCI, from 1998 to 2006, was marked by milestones such as the initiation of the MBBS program, expansion of nursing programs, and the advancement of Allied Health Sciences courses. His initiatives led to the establishment of key facilities, including the Cath Lab and MRI services, enhancing FMCI's healthcare capabilities.
Many who had worked with Rev. Dr. Lawrence, including former deans, principals, doctors, nurses, faculty, and HODs, gathered at the chapel to pay their respects. Bishop Saldanha, in his homily, highlighted Rev. Dr. Lawrence's humble nature and his dedication to fostering the growth and success of FMCI's institutions, while FMCI Director Rev. Fr. Richard Aloysius Coelho expressed gratitude to all priests and guests who participated in the service.
Following the Mass, Rev. Dr. Lawrence's mortal remains were made available for public homage, with mourners reflecting on his profound influence and devotion to FMCI. His legacy endures in the institution's ongoing commitment to excellence in healthcare and education, leaving a lasting impact on Father Muller Charitable Institutions.
