Mangaluru, Sep 4 : 27th Commemoration Day of Saint Mother Teresa was organised by the Saint Mother Teresa Foundation and Samarasya Mangaluru at the Town Hall here on 3rd September 2024.

Speaking at this event, Former IAS officer and incumbent Member of Parliament Sasikanth Senthil emphasised the importance of incorporating values championed by Mother Teresa into politics to shape a better future for children. He urged political leaders to engage in politics that fosters peace, compassion, and love, rather than divisive ideologies.

Nurturing cooperation and compassion

Senthil noted that while teachers and parents often focus on competitive academic achievements, it is equally crucial to nurture habits of cooperation and compassion among children. He highlighted that building a society based on these values is a fitting tribute to Mother Teresa.

Understanding constitutional values

He further stressed that children should be educated about the values enshrined in the Constitution, emphasising the importance of embracing diversity with love. Senthil described Mother Teresa not just as a humanitarian but as a symbol of compassion and equality, reflecting the essence of the Constitution's ideals.

Conflict between mindsets

Senthil discussed the historical and ongoing conflict between two mindsets in India: one that advocates for equality, love, and brotherhood, and another that fosters hierarchy and discrimination.

He reflected on the freedom struggle against the British and the subsequent efforts led by Dr B R Ambedkar to enshrine equality in the Constitution. He noted that despite resistance, the vision of an equal and inclusive India was foundational to the Constitution, celebrating diversity as integral to the nation's identity.

Mother Teresa's legacy

Ayesha Farzana, a social thinker and writer, shared insights on how Mother Teresa's sacrifices imparted a profound message of peace and compassion to the world.

She compared Mother Teresa's commitment to the teachings of Jesus with the Buddha's quest for peace, illustrating how Mother Teresa embodied these principles through her work among the poor and sick in India.

Constitution as a guiding light

The event underscored the importance of the Constitution as a sacred text that promotes democracy and inclusion, and highlighted the need to align personal and public beliefs with its ideals. The gathering included remarks from various dignitaries and was concluded with an acknowledgment of former deputy commissioner and current MP Sasikanth Senthil, who was honoured with the 'Muttale' title, a traditional accolade.

The programme was organised with leadership from Samarasya president Manjula and was emceed by Sunil Kumar Bajal, with the vote of thanks delivered by treasurer Dolphy D'Souza.

The event successfully reinforced the relevance of Mother Teresa's values in contemporary politics and education, aiming to inspire a more compassionate and equitable future for all children.
