Puttur, 15 Aug 2024 : St Philomena Degree College celebrated the 78th Independence Day with grandeur under the joint aegis of NCC units, NSS, Rovers-Rangers, Red Cross Unit, Yaksha Kala Kendra, Performing Arts Unit and Band Teams.

Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Principal of St Philomena Degree College, hoisted the national flag and inspected the parade. In his address, he highlighted the significance of the day, stating, “Today is not just a celebration; it is a solemn occasion to honour the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom. India’s struggle for independence transcended caste, religion, and region, uniting people from all walks of life towards a common goal.” He also congratulated the organizers for coordinating such a remarkable program.

Vice Principal Dr Vijayakumar Moleyar emphasized the enduring legacy of the freedom struggle of India, stressing the principles of truth and non-violence. He urged students to cherish the values of freedom, equality, justice, and democracy while actively working to eliminate corruption and terrorism. “Our youth must preserve these principles and contribute to building a secure and harmonious India that reflects the dreams of our freedom fighters,” he stated.

Rev. Fr Ashok Ryan Crasta, Principal of St Philomena PU College, also extended his congratulations during the event.

The Independence Day celebrations were marked by an impressive parade led by NCC Officer Capt. Johnson David Sequeira, with Senior Under Officer Riya Sushmita D’Souza commanding the NCC cadets of the Army and Naval Corps, NSS, Rovers-Rangers, and Red Cross units, accompanied by the college band. The parade showcased the disciplined spirit of the students and their dedication to the nation.

A captivating cultural program, organized under the guidance of Prashant Rai, Convener of Yaksha Kala Kendra, and Ashwini K., Convener of the Fine Art Association of PU College, enthralled the audience. The performances, imbued with patriotism, were a testament to the creative talents of the students and love for their country.

In a special session, Johnson Joseph, Alcohol/Drug Counselor at Father Patrao Hospital, raised awareness among students about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse, leading them in an oath to stay away from harmful substances. Sister Janet Cutinha, Coordinator of the Alcohol/Drug Department at the hospital, also played a key role in the session.

The event was made successful with the support of various faculty members, including NSS Officers Vasudeva N. and Pushpa N., Rovers-Rangers Coordinators Chandraksha, Sharath Alva, and Poornima D.S., and Red Cross Unit Coordinator Dr Dimple J Fernandes, along with Band Coordinator Sandesh Lobo.

The celebrations culminated with a spirited “Ghar Ghar Tiranga” procession, which saw enthusiastic participation from the students and staff of both the degree and pre-university colleges. The march, symbolizing unity and patriotism, proceeded from the college premises, through Darbe Circle and Kaverikatte, and concluded near the entrance of the college.

NCC Naval Officer Tejaswi Bhat proposed a vote of thanks. Spearl Fiona Pereira, Asst. Professor compered the program. The day’s events were a resounding success, with the active involvement from the entire St Philomena College community, supporting the spirit of patriotism and national pride.
