Puttur , Feb 1, 2025 : St Philomena College (Autonomous) observed Martyrs’ Day in a commemorative event held on Thursday at the PG Seminar Hall of the College. The occasion paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and all the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation. As a mark of respect, a one-minute silent prayer was observed.

Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, the Principal of the College, presided over the event and emphasized the significance of the day. Addressing the gathering, he stated, “Today, we honour countless courageous souls who laid down their lives for the nation. This day also marks the martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi, who was not just a leader but a living embodiment of truth, non-violence, and selfless service. As we pay tribute to Gandhiji and other martyrs, we must introspect and commit ourselves to upholding the ideals they cherished. Let us pledge to uphold truth in speech, non-violence in action, and integrity in life. Let us work towards building an India that is not only economically and technologically advanced but also rich in human values.”

Dr Vijay Kumar Moleyar, Vice Principal of the College, reiterated the timeless relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings. He remarked, “Gandhiji’s principles remain eternal truths, and his simple yet profound way of life continues to serve as an inspiration for all. As we remember the thousands of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation, we must reaffirm our commitment to peace, truth, and non-violence. In today’s world, where moral values are rapidly declining, the message of Martyrs’ ‘Day holds even greater significance. We must stand united against division, advocate for the oppressed, and strive to lead lives rooted in human values.”

The event was enriched with patriotic fervour as Sriraaga , Assistant Professor from the Postgraduate Commerce Department and student Shraddha B. Bhat led the gathering in interfaith prayers and patriotic songs.

Mrs Srimani, Convener of the Postgraduate Department of Social Work extended a warm welcome and also compered the event. Assistant Professor Pratiksha from the Postgraduate Mathematics Department proposed the vote of thanks.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of Prof. Vinayachandra, Registrar (Evaluation), Mr Abhishek Suvarna , Captain Johnson David Sequeira , Deputy Registrars ( Evaluation) Vipin Nayak, , Deputy Registrar (Academic) along with conveners of postgraduate departments, faculty members, and students.
