Mangaluru, June 22 : Scholarships worth over Rs 30 Lakhs will be distributed to over 300 students at the Scholarship Distribution Programme organised jointly by The Catholic Association of South Kanara (CASK) and the CASK Centenary Trust, at the St Sebastian Centenary Auditorium, Bendur, Mangalore on 29th June 2024.

The Scholarships are sanctioned without any consideration to religion, language, marks or merit. The only consideration being the economic condition of the applicant – whether the student belongs to a marginalized or distressed family.

The programme will be presided over by the Patron of CASK, Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha. Mr Michael D'Souza, renowned NRI philanthropist, will be the Chief Guest. The programme will be attended by the Scholarship awardees, their parents, the donors and benefactors of CASK/CASK Trust.

The Catholic Association of South Kanara was established in July 1914 and completes 110 years of service to the community this year. CASK has carried out its mission of reaching out to the marginalised sections of society and of preserving and promoting Mangalorean culture. After the celebration of the Centenary of CASK during 2013-2014, the CASK Centenary Trust was established as an independent entity and all charitable and welfare activities of the organisation are supported through the CASK Centenary Trust.

CASK Trust includes granting Annual Scholarships to students from marginalised families. Since the last three years, they have also supported students from families affected by COVID – either due to death of one or both parents or because of huge hospitalisation costs or loss of jobs. Last year they sponsored the tuition fees of Thirty (30) Manipur students admitted to St Agnes College. Their other programmes are - conducting Teacher Developing Programmes to improve the teaching and empowerment of teachers, Personality Development Programmes for school/college students, provision of Footwear for barefoot school children, installation of safe drinking water units in rural schools, and promotion of Blood, Organs & Whole Body cadaveric donations and supporting institutions caring for special children or the disabled or the elderly etc.

Since 1927, CASK has been publishing its monthly magazine titled “MANGALORE”, which aims to link Mangaloreans worldwide by providing news about the Mangalorean community to its readers. The magazine is presently in its 98th year of uninterrupted publication.
