Puttur , May 21, 2024 : In an event marked by nostalgia and pride, Philomena College Annual Day brought together alumni and faculty to celebrate decades of educational success. The function, held at the Silver Jubilee Hall of the college, featured speeches and recognitions that highlighted the lasting impact of the institution on society.

G Balarama Acharya, a distinguished alumnus and Chairman of GL Group of Concerns, addressed the gathering as the chief guest. He emphasized the importance of continuing the legacy of excellence initiated by the founder of the college, Msgr Antony Patrao. “The foresight of Rev. Patrao in establishing these educational institutions in Puttur has made it a beacon for many students. Our alumni have excelled in various spheres of society, and it is essential that this tradition persists,” Mr Acharya remarked.

The event also featured contributions from other notable alumni, including Mr N Karunakara Rai Derla, proprietor of Ashwini Hotel, Puttur. Mr Rai praised the college for its extensive contributions to academic, sports, political, and cultural fields. “St Philomena college has nurtured students who have significantly contributed to society, creating a positive culture among them,” he stated.

The principal, Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, presided over the function and shared words of encouragement. “Facing challenges bravely is the key to success in life. It is important that everyone holds admiration for their institution, and this admiration should come from the heart,” he advised.

The event also acknowledged academic and extracurricular achievements of current students. Rev Fr Henry Castelino, the retired principal, endowment fund prizes were distributed to students excelling in various departments. Notable mentions included Spandana from BSc, Abhiramchandra Adigundi from B.Com, and Beula PT from M.Com, who were recognized for their achievements in sports such as weight lifting and hammer throw.

The program, compered by Lecturer Srimani, concluded with a vibrant cultural showcase by the members of the senior students and the Parent-Teacher Association. The event also served as an occasion to honor educators and alumni who have made significant contributions, including Dr AP Radhakrishna, Prof. Ganesh Bhat, Prof. Nagaraju M, Prof. Subair, Director of Physical Education Dr Elias Pinto who earned his doctorate degree and retired DYSP Jagannath Rai Nulialu, among the recipients of the honour said that he will never forget this organization that taught him discipline and remembered the disciplined Sepoy Principal Rev. Serrao. He was highly respected as he was the student of St Philomena College during his tenure as the personal secretary to Smt. Indira Gandhi.

The newly elected president of Alumni Association Smt. Pratima Hegde was welcomed by the outgoing president Mr A Jagjeevan Das Rai. Asst Prof. Prashant Rai introduced the guests. Asst professor Dhanya PT announced the names of the achievers :
Spandana (1 BSc), Abhiramchandra Adigundi (Final B.Com), Beula PT (1.M.Com), in weight lifting, Varsha (1.BCA) in Hammer Throw and Nikhil VK, First PU Commerce Department (Yoga), 2nd PU Commerce Adarsh Shetty, KR Yashwin, Amrita K (Athletics), Prithvi K (Hammer Throw), 2nd PU Science Trpthi N (Yoga), Manvit Kanajalu (Chess), Jyotsana Lisa Johnson (Life Saving), Ishika K (Karate), Niti Rai Advit Rai (Life Saving), Pranam (Karate) of First PUC Science Department, and toppers namely Ashwin M.M. (Department of Arts), Pratiksha DJ (Department of Commerce) Halimat Shaima (Department of Science), Sujith NP and Sushmita Dsouza (NCC) were recognized and felicitated.

The program, compered by Asst Professor Mrs Srimani, concluded with a vibrant cultural showcase by the members of the senior students and the parent-teacher association.
